Last month I found a 1914 Barber Quarter. It was completely covered with toning, the word I've found used by sites I've found on line. Nothing could be read Unless I licked it. OH Yum! I couldn't keep licking it each time I wanted to show someone my find, so last meeting I asked Len for cleaning ideas. He said, start with the most gentle. He suggested putting the coin on a towel, covering one side completely with Vaseline Intensive and leaving it for 5-7 days. Then, wipe it off and turn it over and do the same thing to the other side. Do this for as long as it takes to get some results....if you're going to. No positive results, go on to harsher remedies. I'm on my third week and I am getting good results! Details are emerging, whilst Liberty's face is getting softer and softer!!!! Anyway, I wonder if anyone else has tried this, your results, and what else you use?

thanks for your reply. since I wasn't sure that my comments had even posted, I didn't bother to check back right away. I have been using the Intensive Care Vaseline for about a month now. It has taken away most of the toning, bringing out/up the face on the front, but not doing much to the back-with-eagle-and-stars. Today I used some silver polish and saw some results in the finer details of the front. I don't think that my cleaning has taken any value away from the coin. I don't think it has much value given the state I found it in.....nothing visible.

Any cleaning will take value from coins, but most coins dont have much value to start with......
